Every donation you make and every act you take makes a difference
There are literally so many ways you can support FoxTales - or any local rehabber. Just by making changes in your every day life, you are helping your local rehabber. Changes you make mean fewer animals who need the care of a rehabber.
We hope you take time to check out the abundance of information we have included throughout our site! Making small changes has a big impact…
Top 10 Ways You Can Support FoxTales
cc and all rehabbers cc cc and all wildlife cc
Stop Using Rodenticides
Rodenticides do not just kill rodents. They move up the food chain and can kill the animals that eat the dying rodents, like hawks, owls, foxes, raccoons and skunks. The toxins also stay in the body of the secondary wildlife for a long time, compromising their immune system. Additionally, rodenticides act as an anticoagulent, which causes an agonizing death for the poisoned rodent as it slowly bleeds to death. The best method of rodent control is prevention. Start by removing potential rodent homes like yard debris and trash; eliminate food sources; and seal openings to your home that are larger than 1/2”.
Keep Cats Indoors or Catios
It is important to understand the effects that outdoor cats have on the environment and native wildlife. In the United States alone, outdoor cats are responsible for an estimated 1.3 billion bird deaths, 6.3 billion small mammal deaths; 228 million reptiles; and 86 million amphibians. Well-fed cats continue to exercise their hunting instinct, killing for sport rather than for food. Due to the bacteria in a cat’s mouth, newborn wildlife are at grave danger of death if they are bitten.
Register with FoxTales as Release Site
In 2024, FoxTales took in 439 mammals, many of whom came into care when they were infants, which means they need a place to call home upon their release. Scroll further down this page for the requirements.
Switch to Lead-Free Ammunition and Fishing Gear
The only definitive way to remove the risk of lead poisoning to humans and wildlife is to use lead-free ammunition. Lead fragments contaminate the environment and are often too small to detect by sight or feel. A piece of lead no bigger than a grain of rice can sicken and even kill an animal the size of a bald eagle. Ask the hunters and fishers in your life to switch to lead-free ammunition and fishing gear.
Take Homeowner Responsibility
Avoid wildlife issues by taking responsibility for your home. Predator proof your chicken coop. Use wire mesh or hardware cloth to cover the entrance, ensuring it is buried a few inches in the ground to prevent digging. Never use chicken wire, which is too weak and only keeps the chickens in/out. Skunks, foxes and raccoons are excellent diggers. A fox can squeeze through a gap as small as 4”. Our Wildlife Proofing page has information how to protect your flock.
Practice Coexistence
it is important to recognize your role and what you can do to minimize the perceived “negative” impact your backyard neighbors may have on your home and neighborhood. There are literally so many ways to practice coexistence. We have more than 10 pages of actions you can take on our Coexistence handout. And coexistence isn’t just for adults. There are so many actions that kids can take. Think about the suffering you are directly causing by using pesticides. A bird will have seizures, a fox will vomit up his last meal, a rabbit will tremble uncontrollably as the toxins attacked his nervous system, until his body gives out.

Disspell Myths & Preconceived Notions
Ask yourself if maybe it is time to rethink some of the preconceived notions you have about wildlife. Seeing a raccoon or fox during the day does not mean it has rabies. Animals have complex emotions - just like humans. They feel fear and happiness. They mourn. They protect their young with their life. Take the time to dig a little deeper and, to quote Yoda, “Pass on what you have learned.”
Share the Road
We have all seen more wildlife on the side of the road more times than we can possibly count. Those that do survive being hit by a car are lucky if they find their way into the care of a wildlife rehabber. Slow Down. Especially at dawn and dusk. Share the road. Brake for wildlife. Fewer vehicle-wildlife impacts mean fewer animals needing care.

Release Site
In 2024, FoxTales took in 439 mammals, many of whom were orphaned infants. We are always in need of places where we can release animals. Having an active, healthy list of acceptable release locations would be extremely beneficial. There is no requirement regarding which animals you would like released on your property. You can choose just squirrels, or just opossums, or any variation. If you meet ALL the following requirements, we would love to add you to our list. Contact us at foxtales.wildlife.rehab@gmail.com.
YOU MUST MEET ALL OF THE BELOW REQUIREMENTS:
Own at least two acres of land with woods, or if you own less than two acres, then a forest/park needs to be adjacent to your property;
The property must not be directly on a heavily trafficked/busy road;
No use of rodenticides at all. Rodenticides are a menace and have a devasting effect on wildlife, the environment, domestic pets and humans;
No free ranging chickens or ducks on property. If you own chickens or ducks, you must take responsibility for keeping them secure by providing predator proof enclosures;
No free-ranging outdoor cats if you would like cottontail rabbits, skunks or opossums released;
You must be willing to provide food for the released animals for a short period of time, which is usually 2-3 weeks after release. This is to provide time for the animal to adjust to its new environment and be able to find food on its own; and
You must be willing to allow more than one of that particular species to be released at the same time because we never want to release animals alone. This, again, is to facilitate the animal adjusting to its new environment.
