Spotlight: Maya Healy

March 2025

FoxTales Wildlife Rehab is so grateful for our wonderful supporters. We hope you enjoy reading Maya’s story about how and why she supports the FoxTales mission. The Healy’s dog Kit protects their flock.

How did you first find out about FoxTales Wildlife Rehab?

Someone tagged your Facebook page in a post on the local (Hartwood) community page that I’m a member of. I remembered the name and was able to provide it to my mother who lives downtown when she asked me if I knew anyone who could help with the mangy foxes in her area.

You are one of the very first FoxTales sponsors to select a name for a 2025 orphaned fox kit (thanks to your donation during our 2024 Giving Tuesday fundraiser). How did you come up with the name Matilda?

Matilda came from the 1996 film my kids have been watching recently. It also has German origins meaning “strong in battle,” which was fitting for the little fighter.

Why do you think it is important to coexist with wildlife?

I keep backyard chickens on our small hobby farm, and have spent years fine tuning their security from foxes. All animals are special, and the wildlife were here first!

Why do you support the mission of FoxTales Wildlife Rehab?

I love that there is somewhere nearby willing and able to help out local critters. It’s inevitable that human activity will cause problems for the wildlife, and I appreciate that we live in a community where there is a safe place to take these animals for care when they need it.

Is there anything about wildlife that you wish the public would understand?

Make yourselves aware of LOCAL wildlife that ACTUALLY pose a threat — we don’t have much here! Most animals are just trying to eat or escape. Defensiveness does not equal “aggression,” and if you’re unsure about something please don’t shoot first and ask questions later. Every life is important! When in doubt, leave them alone.
